When Sefton Park opened in 1872, it was the largest Victorian park in Britain. Straight away, its magnificent landscape became the focus for an exclusive new suburb of grand villas, populated by rich merchants and ship owners. This talk will explore the architecture and interior decoration of these extravagant houses, and the social lives of their occupants.

Joseph Sharples wrote the Pevsner Architectural Guide to Liverpool (2004). He was a curator at the Walker Art Gallery from 1990 to 2001, and later worked as a researcher at the University of Liverpool, investigating the architectural patronage of Liverpool’s Victorian merchants. He curated the exhibition Merchant Palaces: Liverpool and Wirral Mansions Photographed by H. Bedford Lemere at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in 2007.

Steve Lyus has researched into Liverpool Botanic Collection and gives talks to remind Liverpool of what they once have and what is still left. There is a connection with our Palm House as some of the collection is housed here.

Steve Lyus is a committee member of the RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group, and a Camellia Show Judge. He retired in 2009 from a lifetime working in the software industry, and moved to the Wirral to create a garden for the many ericaceous plants he had propagated over the previous years. In his spare time he volunteers at Ness Botanic Gardens, helping the botanist manage the gardens and collections there.
